Beginners Guide to Boating

A Beginner’s Guide to Boating with Buck’s Island

There is nothing quite like the feeling of leaving the dock behind and heading out onto the Coosa River or Neely Henry Lake. Whether you’ve just picked up a brand-new pontoon or a rugged fishing rig from us here at Buck’s Island, the water is calling.

However, if you’re new to the captain’s chair, the learning curve can feel a bit steep. To help our neighbors navigate their first few trips with confidence, we’ve put together the ultimate beginner’s guide to Alabama boating.

1. Get Legal: Alabama Boating Licenses

In Alabama, boating isn't just about jumping in and turning the key. To operate a motorized vessel, you must have a vessel license (a "V" endorsement on your driver's license).

2. Essential Safety Gear (The "Must-Haves")

Before you leave the Buck’s Island dock, ensure your "Safety Six" are on board. Not only is this smart—it’s the law.

  • PFDs (Life Jackets): You must have one U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket for every person on board. Crucial Alabama Law: Children under 8 years of age must wear a life jacket at all times while the boat is underway.
  • Fire Extinguisher: Ensure it is marine-rated and fully charged.
  • Sound Device: A whistle or air horn is required for signaling in fog or emergencies.
  • Throwable Flotation: If your boat is 16 feet or longer, you must have a Type IV throwable device (like a ring or cushion) easily accessible.

3. Master the "Rules of the Road" on the Coosa

Traffic on the water is different than on Highway 77. To stay safe on our local waterways, remember these basic Alabama Waterway Rules:

  • Give Way to the Right: If another boat is approaching from your right (starboard), they have the right of way.
  • The 100-Foot Rule: In Alabama, you must not operate at more than "idle speed" within 100 feet of a person in the water, a dock, a pier, or an anchored vessel.
  • No Wake Zones: Respect the "No Wake" signs around our local marinas and residential docks to prevent erosion and property damage.

4. Respect the Ramp

If you’re trailering your boat to one of the local Southside launches, remember the "Golden Rule of the Ramp": Load before you go.

Do your prep work—transferring coolers, checking the drain plug, and unhooking straps—in the staging area. This keeps the line moving and keeps the atmosphere friendly for everyone. If you're nervous about backing up the trailer, come see us at Buck's Island! We've been helping folks master the trailer back-up since 1948.

5. Check the Conditions

Alabama weather can change in a heartbeat. Before heading out, check the local forecast.

  • Water Levels: Check the Alabama Power Shorelines site for current water levels and dam discharge schedules on the Coosa River. High flow can mean hidden debris and stronger currents.
